5 Common Myths About Dental Implants – Debunked!

Dental implants are a popular choice for replacing missing teeth, but there are still a lot of myths and misconceptions floating around. Let’s clear up some of the most common ones!

Myth #1: Dental Implants Are Painful

Many people are nervous about the idea of surgery, but the truth is that dental implant procedures are typically done under local anaesthesia, meaning you won’t feel a thing during the process. Afterward, you might experience some discomfort, but most patients report that the pain is manageable with over-the-counter medications such as paracetamol.

Myth #2: Implants Don’t Look Natural

Dental implants are custom-made to match your natural teeth. The crown that sits on the implant is designed to blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile. In fact, most people can’t tell the difference between an implant and a real tooth!

Myth #3: Dental Implants Are Only for Younger People

Dental implants can be a great option for people of all ages, provided they have healthy gums and sufficient jawbone density. In fact, they’re often a better solution for older adults than dentures, since they’re more durable and can help preserve jawbone health.

Myth #4: Implants Require Lots of Maintenance

Once your implant is in place, it’s just like caring for your natural teeth! Regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups are all that’s needed. In some circumstances, your dentist may suggest you see the dental hygienist more regularly to help you with caring for your implant and protecting your investment. It’s important to remember that dental implants can last a long time with proper maintenance.

Myth #5: Implants Are Too Expensive

While dental implants can be more expensive upfront than dentures, they can actually save you money in the long run. Dentures will often need relining every couple of years to ensure they continue to fit well, and replacing every five years as they wear easily. Implants are durable and long-lasting, reducing the need for repairs or replacements.
