The Dental Implant Process: What to Expect from Start to Finish

If you’re considering dental implants, you might be wondering: “What exactly happens during the process?” It’s completely natural to have questions about the steps involved in getting an implant. Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered! Here's a breakdown of what you can expect, step-by-step.

Step 1: Consultation & Evaluation

Your journey begins with a consultation with your dentist. During this visit, your dentist will conduct a thorough examination, including X-rays and scans to assess the health of your teeth and jawbone. The goal is to determine whether you're a good candidate for dental implants.

If your jawbone isn’t thick enough to support an implant, your dentist may suggest a bone graft to ensure a stable foundation for the implant.

Step 2: Implant Placement Surgery

Once you're cleared for the procedure, it’s time for the implant surgery. The dentist will place a titanium post into your jawbone. This procedure is typically done under local anaesthesia, so you won’t feel any pain. After the implant post is placed, the bone will begin to heal around it—a process called osseointegration. This usually takes a few months, but don’t worry, you’ll be able to follow up with your dentist regularly to monitor progress.

Step 3: The Abutment

After the implant has fully integrated with the bone, the next step is placing the abutment. The abutment is a small connector that sits on top of the implant post. Once it’s in place, you may need a short healing period before moving on to the final step.

Step 4: The Crown

Now comes the fun part: your new tooth! A custom-made crown will be designed to match the size, shape, and colour of your natural teeth. It will be attached to the abutment, completing your implant and giving you a fully restored smile!

Step 5: Aftercare & Follow-Up

Once your implant is in place, it’s important to care for it just like a natural tooth. This means regular brushing, flossing, and visits to your dentist and hygienist for check-ups and cleaning. Your implant can last a long time with proper care, so it’s worth the investment.
